We have worked long and hard to collaborate with Braumandl Zinn to produce a beautiful pewter vessel filled with a Tuberose scented soyway candle.
We are please to announce The Zurich - a signature and luxurious candle which will look stunning wherever you place it. The pewter beaker can be washed after the candle is finished and reused for an other purpose, even as a drinking vessel. Alternatively we can refilled with the Tuberose scent again. The beaker will be washed, re-polished and then refilled with the Tuberose scent.
The Zurich candle has a luxurious floral top note along with woody aromas and a hint of musk. A truly exquisite scent. CHF129.-

Hi, my name is Rachel Whiteside Braumandl, the founder of Whiteside & Co and this is my story of how I why I set up my candle making business. I moved to Switzerland from England in 2003 after meeting my now husband on the beach in Marbella in 2002. I had no idea what nationality he was, and I was working as a self-employed massage therapist at the time, with high profile and celebrity clients in the upmarket areas on London including Chelsea, Knightsbridge and Mayfair.
I soon found discovered that he was Swiss and he and his family had an established pewter business, Braumandl Zinn in the heart of Niederdorf, since 1904. After a year of getting to know each other and commuting back and forth between London and Zurich in our free time we decided that I should fully relocate my massage business to Zurich which I did in January 2003. I was able to quickly built up a client base, many of which were expats here in Zurich. There was also a crash course in not only German but also Swiss German which I was determined to learn in order to fit into the Swiss family I had joined and so as not to feel eternally like a foreigner. After some time, and with my entrepreneurial head on I decided to sell British organic cosmetics and candles in my clinic. I had had an interest for many years in candles and saw how popular the natural candles were that I was selling in my clinic. I needed to take a break from working for a few years in 2008 due to family commitments and in order to spend the time raising our two children but I soon got back to running my massage clinic in 2011.
Finally in 2020 with our children more grown up and less dependent I felt I would have time to develop another business idea that would complement my massage business and then coronavirus hit, and the world was forced into a lockdown. I enjoyed the few weeks we had, all at home, no timetable to adhere to and no stress of constantly running around and this, as like for many people gave me thinking time - space in my mind to get creative.
In May 2020 I decided to start researching and learning the art of candle making. My main objective was to keep them as natural and sustainable as possible without using paraffin. I was unable to attend a course in the UK due to travelling restriction so started my own research, ordered the raw materials that I would need and began experimenting.
This experimental process of producing, testing, and developing a product range took a long time, little did I realise how long learning the science behind candle making would take. I was also lucky in that we had a room, within the shop building where I had the space to carry out all the testing and research without disturbing anyone.
Just before Christmas 2020 with Whiteside & Co developed as a brand, we were able to start selling the first candles in our shop and Whiteside & Co was founded. As the months went by and I had to evacuate the space I had been producing in we decided the best idea would be to turn the engraving room at the back of the shop into a dedicated workspace for candle production.
It wasn’t long before I started to gain corporate client interest which in turn meant rapidly upping production capacity. It was a fast-learning curve, with many other factors coming into play such as creating bespoke packaging, label design and legal contracts but it worked out well and we continue to go from strength to strength.
The Christmas season for 2022 has been a great success and we are looking forward to new corporate projects in the pipeline for 2023, developing new products and ideas and continuing to serve our loyal customer base in our shop and online as well as attracting new ones.
Currently our natural scented candle range includes 4 different sized candles from mini to XXL along with scented tealights and room diffusers. We have over 20 different scents to choose from and use a natural blend of soya/coconut wax along with high quality fragrance oils, including, The Bodyflow Range(named after my massage company), which are combined with pure essential oils for a 100% pure wellness feel. Our candles range in price from CHF34 up to CHF200 for our XXL supersized range.
I have always loved candles, both giving and receiving them and love how scents and smells can influence our mood. They are in fact a wonderful indulgence, a gift of ‘me’ time. Whether buying as a gift or for yourself, the ritual of choosing a candle, admiring its design and enjoying its scent, gives the process a deep and personal touch.The power of fragrance on our sense of smell has the ability to relax and revive us and take us back to places of joyful memories and events. I wanted our range to not only be sustainable but also to be honest. That is why each candle has a name based on places myself and my family have travelled. The idea is to inspire others either to remember similar experiences of travel or simply to conjure up a feeling of warmth, comfort, and enjoyment, and even a wish list of travel destinations!

Scented candles – homemade

The name Whiteside for the label is well chosen, a bull's eye, it sounds good and also fits nicely to the product, scented candles. Well, Michael Braumandl and his wife Rachel didn't have to search long: Whiteside is Rachel`s family name.
Rachel works as a massage and craniosacral therapist one floor above the shop on Zähringerstrasse 20 and actually started selling a brand of organic candles from her clinic 15 years ago.
She has always been interested in scented candles and last year she found time to educate herself on the subject. In October 2020 she started to produce then sell scented candles and has already great success: `Scented candles are in vogue: people like to be at home more now and have a cosy atmosphere. And they are good as a gift`.
In an adjoining room of the pewter store which serves as her salesroom, she makes the candles. The average person may think: Melt the wax, add the scent, and you're done. But the whole thing is more of a science because every scent reacts differently with the wax. The fact that the store and workshop are available was of course a starting advantage - by the way, Braumandl has been a household name when it comes to pewter objects since 1904.
In the past, pewter mugs, pitchers and jugs were in high demand - FIFA who was a regular customer now orders candles – and today they sell also more decorative lifestyle items such as ceramics and blankets from England. Michael Braumandl also still repairs and restores antique pewter.
At the beginning, many months ago, the wax was melted in smaller vessels, but now today Rachel has upgraded to a 30 litre melting machine. After decanting, the wax is enriched with the respective fragrance, then poured into wicked glasses and left to cure. Rachel uses an organic blended soy and coconut wax and highquality fragrance and essential oils which she orders from the UK. She has around 15 different varieties of scented candles which bear the names of memorable places she and her husband have visited such as Dubai, Miami Beach, Dartmoor or London, Rachel`s previous hometown. The Sicily however is still on the wishlist.
